Bloom: Installation

An interactive installation called “Bloom – sprinkle life onto nature” was made for the “Cumulus Conference – In a Planet of our Own,” 2015.

The amazing team – Antik, Ankur, Ajinkyaraj, Saloni, Anjana and IxD classmates

The installation was thought about according to the theme of the Cumulus conference – Water and sustainability. The core concept of the installation “Bloom” was to remove the hurdle within you, to take one step forward towards sustainability and protecting our nature.

The theme is conveyed through an interactive installation in three steps: 1. As you approach the installation, the obstruction plate near the water outlet, which normally blocks water flow over the flower, folds away, allowing water to pour directly onto the flower. 2. This direct water flow causes the closed flowers to bloom. 3. When you move away, the flowers return to their closed state and the obstruction plate reverts to its original position, once again blocking the water flow.

The installation involved the making of – 1. Foldable flowers; 2. Arduino (3 Arduino Uno with L293d motor drivers) controlled motors to bend the obstruction plate and open the flower; 3. Transparent acrylic sheet casing fabrication with three chambers to enclose the flowers and the rest of the space sealed for the cyclic water flow; 4. Ultra-sonic sensors to detect people passing by the flower, and 5. A plywood casing to hold all the above components.
